5 Common Causes of iPhone Battery Drain & How to Fix Them

It's a frustrating but common experience: you charge your iPhone to 100%, and within just a few hours of light use, it is already entering Low Power Mode.

In this diagnostic guide, our lead iPhone technicians outline the five most common culprits behind unexpected iPhone battery drain and how you can resolve them today.

1. Background App Refresh

Many apps continuously update their content in the background even when you aren't using them.

How to Fix: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off completely, or selectively disable it for apps that don't need real-time updates (like retail or travel apps).

2. Battery Health Degradation

Lithium-ion batteries are chemically aging components. If your iPhone is more than two years old, your battery health may have dropped below the optimal 80% threshold.

How to Fix: Navigate to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If your Maximum Capacity is below 80%, your device will likely require a professional battery replacement to regain full runtime.

3. Location Services Abuse

Certain apps track your GPS coordinates in the background, which consumes a massive amount of processor power and battery.

How to Fix: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and change app access to "While Using the App" or "Never".

4. Screen Brightness and Display Settings

An excessively bright screen, especially on newer OLED displays, is the single largest consumer of battery power.

How to Fix: Enable Auto-Brightness in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, and consider switching to Dark Mode (Settings > Display & Brightness) which saves substantial battery on OLED screens.

5. Rogue iOS Updates and System Cache Corruptions

Occasionally, system updates leave behind temporary cache files that cause CPU spikes, generating heat and rapid battery drain.

How to Fix: Back up your iPhone via iCloud, perform a factory reset, and restore your data. If the phone runs hot even without use, bring it to a certified technician for diagnostic checkup.
