Why Your Laptop is Overheating: Diagnostic Guide
When a laptop overheats, it protects itself from burning out by thermal throttling (slowing down your processor) or shutting off instantly without warning.
Follow this quick guide to diagnose why your laptop is running hot.
Step 1: Check Vent Airflow
Place your hand near the exhaust vents. Do you feel hot air blowing out strongly, or is the air barely moving even though the fan is screaming?
- Barely moving: The vents or heatsink are clogged with dust.
- Cold air blowing: The fan is spinning but the heatsink has separated from the CPU, or the thermal paste has dried.
Step 2: Use Diagnostic Software
Download a hardware monitor tool like HWMonitor or Macs Fan Control.
- Idle Temp (no apps open): Normal is 40°C - 55°C. Over 65°C indicates background software load or clogged vents.
- Load Temp (gaming/rendering): Normal is 75°C - 85°C. Exceeding 95°C will trigger automatic safety shutdowns.
Step 3: Inspect Fan Operation
Listen closely. Does the fan sound normal, or does it make a clicking, grinding, or rattling noise?
- Rattling/Grinding: The fan bearings are worn out. The fan assembly needs complete replacement.
